Description
Rich and indulgent French toast baked in a caramelized brown sugar custard, inspired by classic crème brûlée flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced thick
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp corn syrup
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Powdered sugar, for serving
- Fresh berries, optional for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth.
- Pour caramel mixture into the bottom of a greased baking dish.
- Arrange bread slices in a single layer over the caramel.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread.
- Let soak for at least 30 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
- Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes until puffed and golden.
- Let rest 5 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve with berries if desired.
Notes
- Best made the night before for deeper flavor.
- Use stale bread for better absorption.
- Serve immediately for a crisp caramel base.
