Description

Rich and indulgent French toast baked in a caramelized brown sugar custard, inspired by classic crème brûlée flavors.


Ingredients

  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced thick
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp corn syrup
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Powdered sugar, for serving
  • Fresh berries, optional for serving


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth.
  3. Pour caramel mixture into the bottom of a greased baking dish.
  4. Arrange bread slices in a single layer over the caramel.
  5. In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread.
  7. Let soak for at least 30 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
  8. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes until puffed and golden.
  9. Let rest 5 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with berries if desired.
